2011 Maisha Partners

Maisha is currently one of the only not-for-profit organizations in East Africa that provides training in film in the East African region (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda). Maisha partners with many local and international organizations in order to best address the needs of our participants.

Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (2009)

Emirati students participated in the 2009 Maisha Filmmakers‘ lab as part of a cultural exchange program with the ADACH.

Amakula Film Festival (2008 – Present)

Maisha Film Lab hosts a Master class and a youth program during annual Amakula Film festival at the National Theater in Kampala.

Bayimba International Music Festival (2009 -Present)

Maisha Film Lab hosts screenings of local films during annual Bayimba Music Festival in Kampala, Uganda.

Columbia University, New York, USA

The Feature Film Screenplay Mentorship Program links MFA screenwriting students at Columbia with intermediate and advanced screenwriters in east Africa.

DCCD (Danish Center for Culture and Development)

The Youth in Film Project is a component of the Uganda Youth Culture Project founded by the Royal Danish Embassy. Maisha is their lead partner in Uganda.

Doha Tribeca Film Festival (2010 – Present)

Maisha and the Doha Film Festival have a cultural exchange between the two organizations to the benefit of their participants and alumni. Students from Doha attend Maisha labs in East Africa, and Maisha will hold the our first Screenwriter’s Lab in Doha in September.

Ghetto Film School (2008)

Maisha produced a short film called Live, Joseph in Kampala for the New York City based non-profit. Maisha alums guided the 15 High School students from the Bronx, New York City as they embarked on their first filmmaking experience.

Kenya International Film Festival – Kenya

Maisha holds the annual Kenya screenwriter’s lab with during KIFF, so that our participants are immersed in the local filmmaking community. Additionally, Maisha’s mentors hold an open master class during the festival.

Makerere University (Music Dance and Drama Department)

Pangea Day (2008)

Maisha participated in the inaugural Pangea Day simulcast, which was seen by millions of people all over the world. Maisha students made 2-minute short films on mobile phones donated by Nokia.

Straight Talk Foundation

In partnership with DCCD (Danish Center for Culture and Development), the Maisha foundation and the Straight Talk Foundation aim to mobilize 13 -19 year olds to join the Youth and Film program.

Maisha holds the annual Rwanda screenwriter’s lab with during RIFF, so that our participants are immersed in the local filmmaking community. Additionally, Maisha’s mentors hold an open master class during the festival.
